Nigeria Drivers License; Application, Verification, Renewal And Authentication

The importance of a driver’s license cannot be overemphasized as you wouldn’t be able to drive a vehicle without it.
Every country has made driver’s license compulsory to regulate the people driving in the road and to also reduce the risk of accident.
The federal road safety Corp. is the governing body of every driver in Nigeria and they have ensured to make getting a driver’s license easy for everybody as long as you are eligible.
In this post, I’m going to give you a tutorial on how to get a driver’s license and also how to renew an expired one in Nigeria.

Details About Nigeria Drivers License

Every country have different policies concerning driving and so is Nigeria.
The Nigerian driver’s licence is a plastic card that gives one the authorization to drive vehicles on the road.
The card was made mandatory to ensure the safety of motorist and pedestrians. Without driver’s license, anybody can buy a vehicle and start using it even without going through the required training for you to drive the vehicle.

Note that you can only apply for a drivers license when you are 18 years or above and you can apply for a three or five years license.

Classes Of Driver’s License

The Nigerian driver’s license is diversefied based on the qualifications of the driver.
This different classes makes it easier for the federal road safety Corp. to know what a driver is qualified ride. For example, not all drivers are qualified to drive heavy duty trucks.
Below are the classes of driver’s license in Nigeria and their differences:

  • Class A: This is what you should apply if you plan to ride a motorcycle.
  • Class B: This is for drivers who own a motor vehicle that has less than three tones gross weight. These are motor vehicles that carry not less than six passengers and stage carriage.
  • Class C: This is a class in which motorcyclists can’t apply for. This class is specifically for vehicles with less than three tones gross weight.
  • Class D: This is for drivers who don’t ride taxis, omnibuses or carriages. This class is usually for vehicles like towing vans.
  • Class E: This is the class in which private drivers who don’t use their cars for commercial purposes usually fall into. Motorcycle riders can’t apply for this type of drivers license.
  • Class F: This is for those who use trucks and other agricultural machineries like tractors.
  • Class G: This class is for those who drive vehicles with semi-permanent or permanent pivoting joints.
  • Class H: This category is for drivers who own earthmoving or heavy duty trucks or vehicles.
  • Class J: There is no class I. Class J is for people who have one physical problem or the other.
  • Class V: This class can be API for the purpose of convoy driving for public figures.

Requirements for Getting Driver’s License In Nigeria

A driver’s license cannot be given to people without them undergoing through series of tests and processes to verify that they are qualified to obtain one. Below are the requirements for you to get a driver’s license:

  • Write a letter requesting for a driver’s license to FRSC. The later should contain details like you house address and your phone number.
  • You must have a driving school certificate to show that you can drive.
  • VIO test certificate.
  • Birth certificate.
  • Eyes test certificate to proof that your eyes are in good health. Note that this tests must be taken in designated clinic approved by the FRSC.
  • Evidence of driver’s permit payment.
  • National identification number (NIN).

How To Get Driver’s License

After fulfilling the above requirements, you can now apply for the license. There are two ways to get your driver’s license which is directly on the FRSC website or in their office. This is how to go about it:

  • Vist the FRSC official website
  • Fill in the required information in the form provided.
  • Submit your information and print it out, while printing it out, make sure to write down your application ID number in the form and keep it safe.
  • Click on the “Pay Now” button.
  • After crosschecking every details, click on “Proceed To Pay” button. A gateway would be open in which you can make your payment.
  • After making payments, go to any FRSC office close to you for capturing.

The above is for the application on their website, this is how to do the physical application:

  • Go to any driver’s license center and request for a form.
  • An invoice would be generated for you, go to any designated bank and make your payment. Make sure to go with a copy of the class of driver’s license you apply for.
  • Go to any DLC office in person.
  • Submit the necessary forms to the Board of Internal Revenue and VIO at the DLC for endorsement. These forms are what I mentioned in the requirements which includes learner’s permit, certificate of vio check, payment slip, certificate of eye test, school certificate.
  • You will have to go through biometric authentication and capturing. Make sure to provide it to the FRSC official.

After this, a temporary licence would be given go you, there isn’t a specified date for the expiry as the officer would be the one to set it for you pending when you will be able to get your original driver’s license.

After sixty working days, go back to the BIR office to get your permanent license.

How To Check The Authenticity Of Your Driver’s License

Alot of people have become victims of getting fake licences even though they applied through the right means. The federal road safety Corp. have deviced a means in which you can check wether you’ve been issued a genuine or fake licence.

  • Logon to nigeriadriverslicence.org.
  • Click on track application status.
  • Input your driver’s license number.
  • Click on “search”, the status of your drivers license would come up.

How To Know The Status Of Your Drivers License

Instead of going through the stress of having to go to the DLC office to know if your license is ready, it is more convenient to check through your phone by sending “NDL STATUS License number” to 33811.
Make sure you use the SIM you provided in your application. A text will be sent telling you if your license is ready or not.

How To Renew Drivers License

Incase you already have a driver’s license but it has expired or it has been misplaced, you can renew/replace it by;

  • Visiting nigeriadriverslicence.org.
  • Enter your drivers license ID or application number.
  • Click on search, a form would be provided. Fill in the required information and submit.
  • Make your payment; the price of renewal or replacement is thesame with the price of getting a new one.
  • Click print to print out your acknowledgement script.
  • Navigate to track DL application status.
  • Enter your details (date of birth, application ID and a copy of your payment confirmation slip).
  • Go to the DL office two passport photographs, payment confirmation slip and your acknowledgement slip.
