Maritime academies are schools that are solely focused on courses relating to marine.
Just like aviation colleges are focused on aircraft, maritime academies are focused on different segments of the spaceship.
Courses like marine engineering are very scarce in Nigeria and the schools teaching the course are also few that’s why I decided to write this to help marine engineering aspirants know the diverse maritime schools, their location and also their uniqueness.
Note that maritime schools do not only teach about marine engineering but other practical courses that are related to industries in the the ocean.

Every maritime school is controlled by the Nigerian Maritime Administration & Safety Agency, this body is responsible for approving maritime colleges and also accrediting courses to school base on what they can offer.
Below are the list of NIMASA approved maritime schools.
CHARKIN MARITIME SAFETY CENTRE, PORT HARCOURT, RIVERS STATE
Rivers State is one of the biggest hub for water related industry, it also houses one of the biggest sea port in Nigeria.
The Charkin Maritime center is a school that runs more than a hundred courses in different maritime fields.
The school is focused on training students who can standout In the industry.
Charkin maritime academy is recognized both locally and internationally and have gotten a good name among global water Industries.
Maritime school has two branch in Rivers state; the headquarter and also a branch in the main campus of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology.
GLOBAL MARITIME ACADEMY NIGERIA
This academy is suitable for busy people and also individuals who already have a degree but want to have knowledge about the marine industry.
Global maritime academy offers both fulltime and partime session for their students.
The offer a wide range of marine programmes that can help you kickstart your career in the marine industry.
Global maritime academy offers course like marine engineering, department, maritime transport, security management and technology.
This school is located in Ughelli South local government area of Delta State, Nigeria.
MARITIME ACADEMY OF NIGERIA, AKWA IBOM STATE
Maritime academy of Nigeria is a maritime school that offers national diploma and higher national diploma in maritime courses.
This school gives attention to the technological aspect of the courses and make sure their students come out as one of the best in the country.
They teach their students different segments of the marine industry which includes ports, manpower to man Merchant Navy Ships, pilotage, shiyards and a whole lot of other courses.
MERCHANT NAVY MARITIME ACADEMY
Merchant Navy maritime academy is a private owned maritime school located in Ogun state.
This school mainly teaches marine engineering although it has other courses. Merchant Navy maritime academy offers diploma awarding programme.
The school is located in the a condusive environment for learning.
COASTAL MARITIME ACADEMY, IKOYI, LAGOS STATE
Coastal maritime academy, it is a relatively new academy founded in 2008.
They have quite a number of qualified instructors with master’s and PhD qualifications.
Coastal maritime academy is approved by NIMASA and offers almost all the courses that a maritime academy can offer.
The school is located in Ikoyi, Lagos State and is currently opened to new applicants.
Stars Maritime Academy Lagos
Stars Maritime Academy is located in Lagos, it isn’t as big as other maritime colleges but it has proved itself to stand amongst them over the years.
Stars maritime Academy offers graduate programme in practical course like cargo handling/management, shipping practise, freight weighing and others.
Note that this academy doesn’t offer marine engineering and other technical courses.
MATRAL MARITIME TRAINING CENTRE, AMUWO ODOFIN, LAGOS STATE
Matral maritime academy was created as a result of resoluting two international maritime conferences which was focused on the development of African seafarers.
This school was established to meet the needs of the African port industry.
It is a private owned institution that was founded after maritime experts from Nigeria collaborated with foreign experts to boost the Nigerian maritime industry and to also give budding students who are passionate about the industry a stepping stone to impact positively to the Nigerian sea port and the marine industry as a whole.
Matral academy was founded and accredited by NIMASA in 2012 and is located in Lagos State.
FALCK PRIME ATLANTIC MARITIME TRAINING INSTITUTE
Falck prime atlantic is a new maritime academy in Victoria Island, Lagos.
It offers a wide range of courses in the maritime industry and is projected to be one of the biggest maritime school in the future.
Despite being a new school, Falck prime atlantic has been accredited with quite a lot of courses by NIMASA.
The school was established by Falk prime Atlantic, an oil and gas company that is focused on meeting the demands of Nigerians in getting the best petroleum products. Falck prime institute train their students in accordance to what the company stands for to equip them with everything they (students) need to become successful people in the maritime industry.
Falck institute offers courses like data management and HSE services, management, marine solutions, emergency response training and a whole lot of others.
FEDERAL COLLEGE OF FISHERIES AND MARINE TECHNOLOGY, VICTORIA ISLAND, LAGOS STATE
Federal college of fisheries and marine technology is a federal marine institution in Lagos.
FCMFT was created in 1969 as a vocational training institute to boost the marine industry in Nigeria.
Although, it doesn’t offer courses related to ports and marine engineering, FCMFT can still be mentioned as a institution that can give out everything needed for an individual to have technical knowledge on marine technologies and how to apply them to the maritime industry.
JOE MARINE INSTITUTE OF NAUTICAL STUDIES AND RESEARCH
Joe marine institute of nautical studies and research is a maritime school in Delta State founded by Dr Joel Opuro Epidei in 1997.
It was one of the founding maritime institution in Nigeria.
This institution is recognized by different maritime bodies within and outside Nigeria.
They conduct training that is in line with the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
They offer many maritime courses which are all approved by NIMASA.

It is no doubt that that staffs In the maritime industry are widely sought after.

There are other schools which didn’t make it to the list.
Lastly, there are certain requirements you need to have to be eligible for admission in these schools; some of the schools requires JAMB, you’ll have to pass with a minimum of five credits in your secondary certificate examination and you’ll have to also pass their entrance examination to be eligible for admission.
