Alot Of Nigerians feel studying a medical course would give them an edge over other courses, this notion is somewhat true.
There are alot of medical courses in the world but some of these courses are not studied in any Nigerian institution that’s why I have decided to write this article to give you a list of all the medical courses you can study in a Nigerian university.

Medical Courses Offered In Nigerian Universities

Let me not waste time explaining too much as more would be said in the course of this article. Below are the medical courses you can study in Nigeria.

Medicine And Surgery

According to the Joint Admission And Matriculation Board, 70% of medical aspirants are interested in studying medicine and surgery.
This course is seen as one of the most marketable course all over the world.
Medicine and surgery is offered in all university and medical schools in Nigeria.
A person who studied medicine and surgery is responsible for attending to sick patient to help them regain their health.
A person who studied medicine and surgery is referred to as a doctor and works in hospital, clinic or any health center.

Nursing

Nurses are people who assists doctors in taking care of patients.
Nursing is also a medical course you can study in a Nigerian institution.
Studying nursing has become very easy compared to before because you can choose to study it either in a university or a school of nursing.
To get a degree in nursing in a university requires you to go through a 5 year programme while getting a diploma in a nursing school requires you to go through a three year programme.
Nursing is offered in almost every university in Nigeria that has a teaching hospital.
Alot Of Nigerians have the mindset that nursing is a profession meant for females, I’m here to tell you that it is not a gender specific occupation.

Radiography

I have written about radiography on this blog, radiography is a lucrative medical course that has not been look into by many students which makes it one of the less competitive medical course in Nigeria. Radiography is a five years medical course that deals with the tissues, bones or internal organs of mammals.
A radiographer is responsible for taking x-ray scans of the anatomical structure to diagnose and treat illnesses.
According to a post in Nairaland, radiography is one of the medical course with a high employment rate.
Almost every university that offers medical courses in Nigeria offers radiography although a few do not offer this course.

Dentistry

The teeth is a very important part of the body which makes this profession important.
Dentistry is another course offered In Nigerian institutions.
It is a four or five years course depending on the school you’re attending.
A dentist is responsible for the studying, diagnosis, and treatment of the conditions of teeth.
Dentistry is a niche carved from medicine and surgery hence dentists are also called doctors.
Getting a degree in dentistry would open you up to opportunities to work in hospitals, clinic and other institutions.

Medical Laboratory Science

Medical laboratory science has a similar job as a microbiology.
A medical laboratory scientist works in a lab, they are responsible for taking tests of people to give doctors more clarification of could be wrong with a patient.
Medical laboratory science is one of the widely studied course in Nigeria with thousands of students applying for it every year.
Medical laboratory science is a five year course; four years theory and practical and one year internship.

Optometry

Optometry deals with the visual system of the body (the eye).
Optometry has been one of the underated courses in Nigeria hence getting an admission in this course is a little bit less competitive than the other medical courses.
Studying optometry will award you with an O.D degree which stands for Doctors of Optometry, these doctors work with other healthcare professionals ophthalmologists and opticians to help in eyecare services.

Pharmacy

Pharmacists ensures the safe and effective use of drugs.
Pharmacists are important personnels in the medical field. They work hand-in-hand with medical microbiologist In making sure that the pharmaceutical industry is safe.
To get a degree in pharmacy, you’ll have to go through a five years degree programme in an accredited university.

Microbiology

Although microbiology is classified under the school of sciences in most Nigerian universities, it is undeniable that it is a medical course and plays a vital role in the medical field.
A microbiologist helps in making researches to bring out vaccines against certain disease causing microorganisms.
In Nigeria, microbiology is a four years course.
There are different branch of microbiology but medical microbiology is the recommended one if you plan on working in the health sector.
Note that you’ll have to go through a master’s degree in medical microbiology for you to be classified as a medical personnel.

Veterinary Medicine

This list will not be complete if I don’t mention veterinary medicine.
Unlike the other courses on this list, veterinary medicine doesn’t deal with humans but animals.
Veterinary medicine is a course offered in every university with a college of health sciences.
Veterinary Medicine helps to maintain and monitor the health of animals.
If you’re passionate about studying a health related course and you love animals, you can choose to give veterinary medicine a shot.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry is the chemical characteristics of a particular living organism.
Biochemistry is categorized under the faculty of sciences just like microbiology but can be considered to be a medical course.
Biochemistry is a four years course in Nigerian universities and the graduates stands a chance in working in the quality control department of an organization.
Biochemistry is gaining traction over the years and will be very relevant in few years time.

Requirements To Get Admission Into A Medical Course

To get a degree in any of these courses, you’ll have to pass your WAEC with a minimum grade of ‘C’ in relevant subjects. You’ll also have to reach the cut-off mark for your preferred course in your JAMB UTME exams.
The subject combination for these medical courses are use of English language, chemistry, physics and biology.
