Waterfalls are one of the numerous beauties the world is endowed with.
A waterfall is an outpouring of water over a clift, I was opportuned to see a waterfall and I must confess it is a beauty to behold.
Over the years, waterfalls have become spots for tourism in Nigeria and the world as a whole.
Nigeria have recorded a high number of tourists and waterfalls are one of the spots they would like to visit. Fortunately, Nigeria is blessed with quite a number of them that’s why I decided to write this post to list out some waterfalls we have in Nigeria, note that the waterfalls mentioned in this posts are opened to tourists hence you can visit them whenever you like.
Waterfalls In Nigeria
Matsirga Waterfall
The reason I made Matsirga Waterfall the first in the list is because it’s one of the falls I was opportuned to have a sight of.
Matsirga waterfall is also known as River wonderful and is located in the southern part of Kaduna State in Madakiya village.
The waterfall is referred to as River wonderful because the source of the water cannot be found even after years of research from different geographers.
Matsirga waterfall is about 30 meters tall and starts from the Kagaro hill forming a large river beneath.
Gurara Waterfall
Gurara waterfall is a beautiful water body located in Niger state in the capital city; Minna.
This fall was discovered in 1975 by the locals there and was named after their gods; Gura and Rara.
Gurara waterfall has served as a tourist attraction especially during the rainy season where the falls is at its full potential. It has been used as a spot for sports, fishing and other recreational activities.
Farin Ruwa Waterfall
Farin Ruwa is a Hausa word that translates to “White water” and is one of the highest waterfall in Nigeria, I assure you that you’ll be amazed at the sight of this beautiful waterfall.
Farin Ruwa Waterfall was discovered in the 1950s in Nasarawa state, central Nigeria.
I can’t say much about this waterfall because I haven’t gotten a firsthand experience but I’ll do well to update this post when I get the chance to visit it.
Farin Ruwa Waterfall is considered to be one of the highest and biggest waterfall in Nigeria because of its height; it covers about 150m in height, two times the size of Matsirga waterfall.
Obudu Waterfall
If it comes to popularity, I think Obudu waterfall can take the crown.
This is the first waterfall I heard about; I read about it in a book when I was in primary school many years ago and I’m sure when a foreign tourist get Into Nigeria looking for a waterfall to visit, Obudu waterfall would definitely be recommended to him.
Obudu waterfall is affiliated to the popular Obudu cattle ranch in Cross River State. The waterfall isn’t as high as others but is still a beauty to behold. Close the the waterfall are animals like monkeys, chimpanzees, rare species of birds and other beautiful animals.
Awhum Waterfall
Awhum Waterfall is a waterfall located in Enugu state in Eastern Nigeria.
The waterfall is about 30 meters tall which can be converted to 100 feets, this a proof of how high it is.
This waterfall is sorrounded by cliffs and tall trees and has become a spot for tourists who get a chance to visit Enugu state.
Unlike most waterfalls, Awhum Waterfall is not a public owned fall but privately owned. Awhum waterfall is managed by the Catholics hence there is always a staffs who will assist you in your tour through the waterfall.
Assop Waterfall
Assop waterfall is a very beautiful waterfall in Plateau state.
One beautiful about this fall is the green vegetations around it. If you have visited Plateau state it should be a common knowledge that a large part of the state is covered by rocks.
The waterfall is covered by high rocks and trees which gives off a feeling of a forest.
Plateau state is the hub for different species of birds, infact there are some species of birds that can only be found in plateau state.
Assop waterfall will definitely give you a thrilling experience and the environment is safe and secured for tourists.
Kwa Waterfall
If you are in Cross River State or plan to visit soon to have some funtime then you should tryout Kwa waterfall.
This waterfall is a property of Cross River national park and is found inside the park hence you have to pay before entering the park.
Kwa waterfall forms the Kwa river where visitors in the park swim. The river is occasionally used for watersports and fishing.
Arinta Waterfall
Arinta Waterfall is located in Ekiti state close to the Ikogosi warm spring.
There has been little information about Arinta waterfall but I can tell you it’ll give you a thrilling experience.
The waterfall have a cozy environment around it which can be used as a spot for picnics and hangouts.
Mayanka Waterfall
Mayanka waterfall is a significant waterfall in the history of Nigeria. Mayanka is a Hausa word for slaugter place. It was a place of execution during the precolonial system of government.
Mayanka waterfall isn’t a popular waterfall and have a low amount of visitors because of Gurara waterfall but the significance of Mayanka Waterfall cannot be underated as it is a symbol of honor for the people who experienced the bad incidents carried out by the precolonial masters.
Erin-Ijesha Waterfall
Erin-Ijesha is one of the oldest waterfall discovered in Nigeria, it is believed to be discovered by hunters in 1140 AD other historians claimed the waterfall was discovered by the daughter one of the daughters of Oduduwa and that the waterfall has a traditional significance.
The waterfall is located in Osun state and has become a spot for photography and relaxation because of the refreshing breeze around it.
Erin-Ijesha waterfall is sorrounded by other water bodies around it that would make your experience more exciting.
Conclusion
As you can see, Nigeria is filled with beautiful waterfalls and tourist attractions which you can never get enough of.
As a ardent traveler, my advice to you is to make good use of this list to make yourself enjoy the waterfalls in Nigeria and have an experience of how it feels to see a waterbody that runs vertically instead of the usual horizontal.
